Cairo
NY -- How often do you come across a product, let alone a wine
brand, that lives up to its own hype? Well, I'm here to tell you
that it does happen from time to time and that the subject wine, a/k/a
Foro Tuscan Red, comes as close as anything to fulfilling that
obligation.
At $7.69 a bottle
(from a not-so-discount local wine merchant) the price was certainly
right. The following Foro website bullet points contain only two
minor inaccuracies, one of which derives from my own subjective opinion.
-

-
* Sour cherry and black currant aromas
-
* Layers of earthy spice and leather
-
* 90-percent Sangiovese/10-percent Merlot
-
* Silky smooth texture
-
* Soft fruit and supple, velvety tannins
Nitpickingly I must say that the leather layer didn't make itself known,
but that the earthy spiciness was certainly present.
As a
matter of fact, my bottle promised the grape content at 100% Sangiovese
while the bullet points listed above credit Merlot for 10% of the total
grape volume. If I had to place a wager based on my own very
Sangiovese-experienced palate, it would be that the website's Merlot
disclosure is more accurate than the
bottle's.
Regardless, this is a very good "Sangiovese" and represents excellent
bang for the buck. A tip for Sangiovese newcomers:
Serve something else for wine-and-cheese gatherings. This variety
is made for hearty meals.
